The Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen Gate) is probably the most iconic structure in all of China.  Located at the north end of the Tiananmen Square, the gate is adorned by a massive portrait of Mao Zedong, the founder of modern day China.

Chang'an Avenue separates Tianamen Gate from the main square.  The Forbidden City is located north of the gate.
